Early Pregnancy Scan with High hCG: Understanding the Results

Question
I am 42 and have had infertility problems forever (I spent seven years on some form of treatment or another) I've had one baby via IVF and two miscarraiges (one IVF one natural). To my HUGE suprise, I tested positive last Friday. I can't be certain of my actual last period date, but when I tested, I knew I was a few days late. My PA did an ultrasound and found a sac, but no embryo and she stated this was consistent with an early pregnancy. My bloodwork however revealed an HCG of 3900. Fearful of an ectopic, my MD had me come do another ultrasound 48 hours later. Again, no embryo, just a sac. HCG had almost doubled and the radiologist and my doctor concluded the pregnancy wasn't viable -- an embryo should have been visable. I opted to miscarry spontaneously vs. D and C. It is now six days later, still no period and my symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, etc. are worse. Now I'm wondering, could they be wrong? Or should I go forward with the D and C. I see my MD in another two weeks regardless, but I'd like to put some of my anxiety to rest.

Answer
Lori,
Did they visualize your fallopian tubes to rule out an eptopic? I would go back at this point to have another ultrasound. I think you made the right decision for you. I probably would have made the same choice. Maybe there will be a little heart beat this time. I hope there is. Then you will have made the right choice to wait. Also, it's possible your body absorbed the sac. I will keep my fingers crossed for you today. Good luck!!
