Postpartum Bleeding After Intercourse: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
i gave birth vaginaly a little over three weeks ago so me and my husband decided we were ready to resume our sex lives. however, during intercourse i started bleeding really bad,i was dripping bright red blood and it was running down my legs and there was a puddle. i know its not lochia because mine was already to the yellowish-white stage. so is it ok that im bleeding or should i be concerned? is it because of intercourse?

Answer
Lindsey,
You are the perfect example of why we tell women to wait SIX weeks to have intercourse. Yes, the bleeding is from having intercourse! If the bleeding hasn't slowed down, go to the hospital or call your doctor! Just because you felt like you were ready, you obviously weren't. Don't try that again until after your 6 weeks check up! Good luck!
