Diastasis Recti Closure: Is Your Abdominal Separation Resolved?

Question
helene,

i currently had diastis recti, however, i am to the point where my midline closes completely when the muscle is contracted.  when i "test" for the seperation, the muscles completely close in on my fingers.  i am wondering if this means the diastis recti is now closed?

Answer
Good news - this means that your core musculature is functioning properly. If you are less than 6 months postpartum, or you still feel that you can press your fingers deeply into your mid line as you test, then still treat your mid line as if you still have a diastasis. No crunches, oblique pulses, roll-ups, etc.

You'll notice that slowly your mid line connective tissues will become denser and more elastic, and when that happens your gap will not only close around your fingers, but will become quite shallow too. When this occurs, you have fully recovered from diastasis and can safely do all types of exercises.

Most likely, your mid line will open up again on subsequent pregnancies.
