Understanding Recurrent Miscarriage: Causes, Risk & Support

Question
QUESTION: I've had 5 m/c's in the past 2 years (6,13,12,8 and 8 weeks).  I've tested negative for any health issues, but 2 of the m/c's were sent to pathology and showed chromosomal abnormalities.  However, my partner and I are both chromosomally normal.  I'm pregnant again and am feeling the loss of symptoms, but I'm only at 5 weeks.  Do you think I'm m/c'ing again?

ANSWER: Hi Angi
My goodness, how awful for you to have to go through this 5 times.
Chromosomal abnormailities in the foetus can be put down to a few things, it may be worth having a chat to the specialist / GP in reference to this. If they have tested yourself and your partner and all is fine, it could be that the miscarriages are down to pure bad timing.
If either the egg or the sperm is old, this can lead to abnormalities.

Because you have miscarried so many times you now recognise the symptoms, but because you're so early on its probably too early to tell what's going on should you go for a scan. I think you do get an instinct though.

I'm sorry I can't be of much help. It's a case of waiting to see what happens, but it won't hurt to see your GP or midwife.

I wish you the best of luck and hope all is ok. Please do come back and see me if there's anything else.

Kindest Regards
Sarah

QUESTION: I guess I should trust my instincts.  I'm very sure this will be #6 but I'll be seeing my GP next week.  I am 40, but this has been happening for the last few years, even though my DH and I both test normal and healthy otherwise.  Thanks for the kind answer.

Answer
Hi Angi
You're welcome. Age can play a big part and as you know,  the older you are the higher the chance of miscarriage.

I do hope that your instincts are wrong and you go on to have a successful and healthy pregnancy.

Wishing you all the best.
