Understanding Rh Negative Blood Type: Possible Genetic Explanations

Question
Both my parents are postive. Mother A+, Father O+.I have rh-,my younger sister has A+. How did this happen? My father says he can't be my real father.

Answer
Hi,
Genetics can be quite a tricky thing to understand, but based on the information you have givenme there is no reason to think that your father is not your biological father - I can't say that he definitely is, but regardless of you being Rh- he could still be you biological father.
I'll try to explain how it works:
Genes can be dominant or recessive. In both your mother and father, the dominant gene for Rhesus factor is positive (+). However, each person carries two copies of each gene: one from their mother, and one from their father. Whilst your parents dominant genes makes them Rhesus positive, they could well be carrying a recessive Rhesus negative gene. If this is the case, and you inherited the Rhesus negative gene then you would be Rhesus negative. Therefore, despite your father being Rh+ you were born Rh-.
I hope this helps, if you need more information please don't hesitate to get back to me.
