Understanding Your Blood Test Results: ALT and CRP Explained
QuestionHi!I am trying to find out about my blood tests.I had a test before i went on methotrexate to see if i am ok to start it.When my tests came back and my ALT was at 64 and the crp at 19.5.I ahve been put on the methotrexate and i have to have more blood tests while i am on it.Could you explain my ALT as i have never heard of it before. Thanks Mandy
AnswerHi Mandy,
ALT is a test that measures Alanine transaminase - a chemical marker that is linked to liver function. This is particularly important when taking a drug like methotrexate as it can affect the liver. I cannot comment with absolute certainty as the values between different labs often varies, but your level does seem a little high (levels are usually around 5 - 40 u/l). Have you discussed the results with your doctor? As you have been allowed to start the methotrexate I should think they have taken your results into consideration, but you might like to speak with him/her if you are concerned.
I hope this was helpful, if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Best wishes,
Sam
