Understanding CPK, CK, and Troponin Lab Tests
QuestionWhy is a CPK/CK MB/TROPONIN lab taken?
AnswerHi Rebecca,
CPK and CK refer to Creatine Phosphokinase and Creatine Kinase - both are enzymes found predominantly in the brain, skeleton and heart. MB/troponin is a chemical that is generally found elevated when there has been some damage to the heart. Lab tests that examine these levels are usually taken when there is suspicion of a heart problem - a heart attack or something similar.
Best wishes,
Sam
