Understanding Ureaplasma & HPV High-Risk Type 16 Results: What To Do Next

Question
Hello

I'm in a foreign country and I've just had a bunch of test done to check my sexual/female health.

The results came back saying I am positive for ureaplasma urealyticum and positive for HPV high risk type 16.

The clinic is closed til Monday and it's really expensive to go there.
My question is...
Do I need to get treatment for this...I was freaked when I first read the results, they didnt give me any information, but from what I can find on the internet, the first thing is really common and doesn't really cause any problems, and the second thing is also common and can cause cancer problems but also may not have any treatment.

Please can you shed some light?
My actaul PAP came back negative for any traces anything bad.

Thanks
Kath

Answer
Hi Kayte.  Ureaplasma urealyticum is a bacterial infection.  It is mainly asymptomatic, so you may not have known that you had it.  Treatment with antibiotics should take care of the infection.  HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is a sexually transmitted virus that can cause cervical cancer.  There are many strains of the HPV and these are divided into two groups, High-Risk and Low-Risk.  The Low-Risk group typically does not cause cancer.  But, type 16 is a member of the High-Risk group.  This doesn't mean that you have cervical cancer!  What it does mean is that further testing (possibly a biopsy of the cervix) is probably the next step.  Even if it is expensive, I would recommend that you contact your clinic.
