QuestionHi. I am a 28 year old female, married for 5 years. My husband and i have
been trying to conceive about 6 mos now. We have recently been seeing a
doctor regarding not conceiving yet. We found out that my husband's sperm
count is really low, and the doctor prescribed coQ10 for my husband to
increase this. Secondly, the doctor had me come in on day 12, 15, 17 and 19
of my cycle to see when and if i was ovulating. We found out that my follicle
is getting bigger, but the egg by even day 19 didn't release and there were
cysts visible around the follicle. The doctor told me to come in day 12 of my
next cycle to get injection of hcg shot to release my egg. Some questions:
1) Are these follicular cysts? Is this an example of anovulation?
2) Will i have to go through these shots every time i want to conceive? Is this a
permanent problem, and what is the cause of this? Is the bc pills i was on for
5 years?
3) Will i ever conceive normally?
4) Any other cause of worry for me?
Please help. I would greatly appreciate your input. Kari
AnswerDear Kari,
The follicular cysts are common at times, and may not necessarily mean that you don't ovulate every month. Your doctor can do bloodwork to see if you do ovulate or if your hormones are at the right level for ovulation on your own. The fact that you didn't ovulate but had a mature follicle would indicate anovulation. Birth control pills would not be a cause of this as some women just have difficulty ovuatling on their own. It's possible that you can conceive without the injections, but your doctor will need to monitor you and perform the necessary tests to determine if you do ovulate on your own on certain months. This can be an easy problem to treat so hopefully you will conceive. The sperm count can also be an issue that combined with anovoulation, can lower your chances. However, 6 months is really not that long, so hang in there. Some people take a year, even without fertility issues. Good luck.
