Fertility After a Molar Pregnancy: What to Expect & Next Steps

Question
Hello Dr. Ramirez.

i am 23 yrs old and have a four year old daughter. for the past two years i have been trying to conceive a second child with no such luck. last year in July i got a big surprise when i found out i was pregnant but two weeks after that it was diagnosed as a molar pregnancy with numerous ultrasounds after following some vaginal bleeding i had experienced. i did not need a D & C since my own body was starting to get rid of it and passed the cell mass on my own.i had my blood work done to check my levels went down and the doctor never really told me exactly what should my waiting time frame should be and well a year later and no baby yet. Can a molar pregnancy cause any infertility? should i just keep waiting and continue to try or is it time to speak to specialist and seek help?

Answer

Dr. Ramirez
Hello,

With Molar pregnancies, you should wait at least a year before trying to get pregnant again.  It does not lead to infertility, so something else may be going on.  Technically, the recommendation is to have an infertility evaluation if you have been unable to get pregnant after one year of trying.  Since you have been pregnant twice on your own, your chances are pretty good that you will achieve a pregnancy again, and since you are young, you have a little time to play with.  Sometimes the problem may be a small problem like irregular periods or a hormonal imbalance and simple treatment can solve the problem and lead to a pregnancy.  Without seeing someone and undergoing an evaluation you won't know.

So, you have two choices:  You can continue to try on your own for another 6 months or so, or see a specialist and start undergoing an evaluation.  I think that either choice is okay for now so it is totally up to you.
