Hypoplastic Uterus & Delayed Puberty: Fertility Outlook & Treatment

Question
hi i am 27 years old from Kenya i have been waiting for my periods all my life i saw a doctor recently and a pelvic scan revealed a hypoplastic uterus. i also have developed any secondary sexual characteristics. my FSH and LH were elevated also from tests while prolactin is within the normal . the doctor prescribed prempak c for me and i have since gained weight and breasts are enlarging. is there the slightest chance that i will be able to conceive because iam planning to get married?

Answer
Hello Felicity from Kenya,

Since you haven't given me your exact FSH and LH numbers, I can't answer this with complete certainty.  However, an elevated FSH level and no periods indicates that the ovaries are not functioning.  If the levels are over 20, then that indicates that the ovaries are shut down.  Without ovarian function, you cannot get pregnant on your own, you would need to use donor eggs.  In addition, with the description of a hypoplastic uterus, lack of secondary sexual characteristics and elevated FSH, it sounds like you have a congenital malformation of the genital system.  This too will inhibit your ability to become pregnant.  You should have genetic testing done, as many of these can be caused by genetic abnormalities.

If there is uterine development, even if it is small, and the uterus responds to hormones to produce an adequate endometrial lining, then there will be the option of doing Donor IVF in order to get pregnant.  You need to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist for complete evaluation.
