High LH, Low FSH & Fertility: Understanding Your Hormone Levels

Question
I was told by my OBGYN that my LH hormone is high and my FSH is low, and he recommended that I take a fertility drug to help me get pregnant.  When I researched on the internet I keep seeing ovarian failure related to this problem.  Can you have this problem & not ovarian failure?  I was not getting cycles for about 6 months.  I took provera to get it started and now me & my husband are hoping I am regular and that I am ovulating.  How serious is this hormone problem if I start getting regular cycles, or how serious if I don't.  Any tips for me to become pregnant, because my husband and I are scard of fertility drugs in  fear of having more than two kids at once.  Thank you, Marcy

Answer
LH (luteinizing hormone) is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland that initiates ovulation at mid-cycle. FSH  (follicle stimulating hormone) is also produced by the anterior pituitary gland and is the hormone that causes the growth and maturation of follicles in the ovary prior to ovulation. You may not be ovulating due to the high LH. If the Provera did bring on your period, you obvoiusly do not have ovarian failure. However, you may need some fertility medication to help increase he chances of ovulation. A good medication to start with would be clomiphene citrate (Clomid). It is safe and may do the trick. Discuss it with your doctor.
