Delayed Period After Laparoscopy & D&C: Causes & When to See a Doctor

Question
hi, i have had a lap and dnc in november and to date have not yet got my periods, please tell me what could be causing this and is this common. thanks

Answer
Hello Sandra from South Africa,

If you had normal and regular periods prior to the Laparoscopy/D%26C, then this is not normal.  If you had irregular cycles prior, then this would be back to your norm.  If it is not normal for you, you should see your doctor and have the following done:

1.  Have a blood pregnancy test done.  If negative, go to #2.
2.  If negative, take Provera 10 mg per day for 5 days to start a period.  If your period starts then no further treatment is required.  Wait and see if normal regular cycles occur.
3.  If no period comes, then have a hormone blood test done to check for ovarian function, thyroid function and pituitary function.  Then take a birth control pill 1 tablet three times per day to induce a period.  You then need further testing to make sure that scar tissue was not formed within the uterine cavity from the D%26C.  This is done with a procedure called a hysteroscopy.

I hope this helps,
