Metformin and Pregnancy: Expert Advice for Filipino Patients

dear doctor,
i'm from the philippines. an endocrinologist/fertilitt expert here in my country are very rare and usually hard to find. if a patient finds one, they usually don't come affordable. thank you for the reply to my question last time. this is my follow up question: i have been started on metformin, should i discontinue use of it as soon as i find out i'm pregnant already? please offer a detailed advice on metformin other than the internet write-ups. thank you in advance and more power. Hello Jannahmaeil from the Philippines,

Yes, you should stop the metformin once you become pregnant.  The usual reason for metformin is for insulin resistance (elevated insulin levels) as can be found in some, but not all, PCOD patients.  The usual dosage is 1500 mg per day in three 500 mg doses.
