QuestionMy mother was perscribed codine for hip pain. She became very weak and nautious. Her doctor has told her the codine stripped her stomach. He gave her Vioxx to correct this. She is still very weak and nautious. Is her doctor doing right by her?
AnswerI don't understand the term "stripped the stomach" but codiene is notorious for causing nausea in people. It is not an allergic reaction, but simply a side effect of all narcotics, but codiene tends to be a worse offender.
The Vioxx is not prescribed to correct this, but simply is an alternative for joint pain, and it tends to be easier on people's stomachs, as compared to the older anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin, Alleve, Advil, Aspirin and others.
