Ovarian Cysts: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options
QuestionHI! I am just writing concerning an ovarian cyst problem that I have been dealing with for a year or so. Let me give you a bit of history. I am in my twenties. I have 2 children, ages 4 and 1. I had difficulties with both pregnancies but easy labors and deliveries. After the birth of my first baby, I stopped having a period. My doctor put me on Birth control to try to help it. When We wanted to try for our second baby. I went off bc, and stopped having cycles again. My dr prescibed provera to help me have a period until I finally conceived. After the birth of my second, I had a mirena IUD put in. I suffered with that for 6 months until I finally went to the dr and found that I had a very large cyst on my right ovary. He put me in surgery right away, he also took out the iud. After surgery, I went on the bc pill mircette. After 6 months, I still wasn't having a period even though I took the pill faithfully. My dr prescribed a more powerful pill Yasmin. I finally had a period and it was kind of different, I guess since I hadn't had one in a long time. During the past six months, I have experienced mood swings, vaginal dryness, no desire for sex, hot flashes, and pain on my right side where my first cyst had been. During my period last week, along with all those other symptoms I started to feel light headed and dizzy, and a little nauseous. I know I wasn't pregnant because I tested to make sure. I thought that maybe I was feeling like that because of not having a period for so long. My period ended last saturday and I haven't felt any better. I can hardly stand up without getting light headed. I turn my head wrong and I feel a ringing in my ears. When I get light headed, my head pounds and my fingers tingle. The reason I am writing is that I made a dr appt. on Friday. I live in a very small town and so the only ob/gyn does o.k. but isn't too personable and patient with me. I was just wandering what you thought could be wrong, and maybe some ideas of what to ask him at the appt. Thank you so much for your time!

AnswerHi Kandice,
I don't think that the light-headedness is connected with your menstrual problems. It may be that you have developed an inner ear dysfunction accounting for the positional dizziness. The tingling in your fingers may very well be anxiety related. In any event, it would be a good idea for you to have a complete blood count to rule out anemia and a comprehensive metabolic panel to see if your calcium is normal. As for your menstrual problems, I would see about getting another pelvic/transvaginal ultrasound to assess the size and general condition of your ovaries. Ovarian cysts can have an effect on your cycle. By the way, if you are not satisfied with your OB/Gyn doctor, you should get a second opinion. Your peace of mind and confidence in your doctor is very important to a successful resolution to this problem.
