South Beach Diet & Diarrhea: Is It Normal?

Question
I started on the South Beach diet about 3 1/2 weeks ago.  I am 45 years old, weight 245, height 5'7".  Since starting the diet, I have lost 10 pounds.  My problem is I have also had diarrhea for 3 weeks.  Is this normal?  Should I talk to my internist about it?  Or just wait it out?  I have found since having my gallbladder out 2 years ago that I get diarrhea easily, but it doesn't usually last this long.

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Diarrhea after having your gall bladder out is not uncommon.  Since your diarrhea started with your change in diet I suspect the change is the cause.  While I don't think the lack of carbs would have this impact, it is likely the increase in vegetables and perhaps a slight increase in fats (that would correlate well with your gallbladder removal).  Unless you're lifestyle is impacted by a great degree, it may be prudent to just wait it out a bit longer and see if things settle out.  Certainly if there is any blood, abdominal pain, or cramping, I would suggest seeing your internist.

Sometimes fiber supplements (Metamucil or the like) can improve this type of symptom in people with no gallbladder.

Good job on the weight loss, and I hope you're coupling your improved diet with increased exercise or activity.
