Dog Bite Infection: Amoxicillin & Swelling - Seeking Medical Advice

Question
First I would like to thank you for taking my question, I appreciate it.
I am taking Amoxicillan 500 mg for 1 week, they were prescribed by dentist as he said 2 teeth are infected & one on the bone.
Anyway, Friday a.m. I was bitten by my 11 yr old dog that's had is rabies, etc. I've been using Hydrogen Peroxide & taking good care but today (even though I'm taking antibiotics), it is raised & swollen with the red area around the bite spreading.
Do you think that the antibiotics will calm the swelling down or do I need to go to a clinic for some type of shot?  Thanks again.

Answer
Dog bites in general get infected, usually.  The dog's mouth is anything but sterile, and a bite is like a dirty puncture wound.  It appears you don't have to worry about rabies, but you are getting a little infecion.  The treatment should be initially, good cleansing with soap and water, then keep the bite clean and covered, maybe with a little neosporin/polysporin creme or ointment.  Peroxide doesn't have any role after the initial cleansing.  Like I said, all bites will get red and a little infected... it just depends on how much and whether it is progressing or going away after 3-5 days.  There is also soft tissue crush damage from the dog's powerful jaws... which will cause some redness and swelling.  Basically, see how it does from Sunday (today) to Monday... if the redness is increasing, get in touch with your doctor... if not, then just keep an eye on it.  Unfortunately, the antibiotic (Amoxil) won't cover all the bugs (bacteria) that are in the dog's mouth, so you will need another antibiotic if the wound infection progresses.

Hope this helps...
