Red Hands After Childbirth: Potential Causes & What to Do
QuestionI have this problem that I hope you can help me with. I gave birth six years ago when I was 24 to a wonderful little boy, and shortly after I gave birth, I noticed the palm of my left hand was real red, then again 2 years ago, I gave birth again and shorly after birth, my right hand was the same. It doesn't hurt or itch or anything, but the thing is, it never went away. And now all of a sudden it seems to be getting worse. It's getting bigger, and darker red. I asked my ob/gyn about it and she said she see that in people who drink excessively, I told her I don't drink nearly enough. I only have a drink like every 6 months or so. But she said that could be coming from an overactive liver. I was wondering if you could tell me anything about this? Should I go to my family doctor and be tested? Or should I just let it go? What are the symptoms of an overactive liver? People that see it think I burnt my hands, it looks terrible. I really hate for people to see my hands. Any information you may have about this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You,
AnswerHi Christie,
I know what your OB is talking about. It is called 'Palmar Erythema'. It is sometimes seen in people with Liver disease. There are other things that can cause this as well. I would definitely see your healthcare provider for an evaluation and lab tests to determine the cause of this.
