Synthroid & Tea Interaction: Potential Effects & Safety

Question
I currently take 100 mcg Synthroid. I would like to start drinking a "White and Green Tea Infusion" from "Stash Tea Company" (3 cups a day) and I drink 1 cup of espresso coffee in the morning. Is there any negative effects of drinking this tea while on Synthroid that you know of?  I asked my doctor today, but he wasn't sure and said he didn't think so. I appreciate any help you can give me in this matter. Have a great day!  -Rina :)

Answer
Hello Rina,

I can't see any problem with drinking coffee and tea while on thyroid replacement.  In fact, I don't really consider people who are on thryroid replacement to be an medications, so to speak.  That sounds funny, I know, but once a patient is normalized on thyroid hormone they are where they would be physiologically without medications.

The only little red flag I see is that, as you know, the hallmark of hypothyroidism is being tired.  So I would wonder about dose (is it enough?) in a patient who inquires about drinking extra coffee and tea.  That's it though.

Best of luck
Dr.T
