Blood Bruise on Finger: Should You Drain It?
QuestionI have what I will call a "blood bruise" for lack of a better term, on my right hand middle finger on the left side of my nail. My finger was pinced between some metal on accident and it immediately formed a "blister full of blood" I assume. On a scale of 1-10 the pain is a six and 1/2 with pressure and it is swollen around the affected area. Should I puncture it to relieve some pressure?
AnswerHi Jerriolyn,
You probably should punture it. Do so with as sterile a technique as possible. Watch for signs of infection (heat, redness, swelling, increased pain and drainage) after you puncture it. Keep it clean with soap and water and keep it covered. Do NOT use antibiotic ointment. If signs of infection show up, see your healthcare provider for further treatment.
