-----Question-----
My husband recently went for a physical and his LFT's were slightly elevated. He then went and had a Abdominal sono and it showed mild splenomegaly. His Dr. told him to stop OTC NSAIDS and no Alcohol for 3 months and then they would recheck his LFT's. What do you think the causes are for these symptoms?? What treatment? Is this something we should worry about??

Thank you

Karen

liver functions elevated can have many causes.... if he told him to limit alcohol, it sounds like he drinks a lot... if that is the case, and if he can stop, things should go back to normal.  If he can't stop, then he needs to consider that he has a drinking problem.  If he does stop and things go back to normal, then he will know that his body doesn't like alcohol.  It sounds like the doctor is evaluating things in a nice step wise progression...... good luck with it....

He hardly ever drinks and when he does it's just one or two. That's why I'm not sure why there elevated.

Answer
mild splenomegaly is a tough one, because there isn't anything to compare it to.... he may have a slightly large spleen all the time.  The liver function tests are elevated because something is damaging the liver, whether it is a virus, alcohol, a prescription medication, an herbal supplement.... I would still go with the no alcohol trial and have things checked again, to see if the liver functions are better.   Right now, I don't see anything that should make you panic.....
