Navigating Doctor Refusals & Concerns: What Are Your Rights?

Question
I have gotten bacterial vaginosis twice and have received treatment from Urgent Care and not my family doctor.

I think I am getting it again so I called my family doctor to schedule an appointment with her. She refused to see me and told me to go back to whatever person prescribes my birth control because it is supposedly directly related.

I told her that I get it from the Health Department because that is where she TOLD me to go originally.

She still insisted I go back there and would not schedule me.

I dislike my doctor anyway, but because I have this nasty BV I was going to cooperate and go until I could find a new doctor.

Her staff is unprofessional (one time her nurse referred to me ethnically), and she doesn't listen to my symptoms! For instance, one time I told her that the antibiotic she gave me was making me sick and giving me the runs...she told me to keep taking the medicine and wanted a stool sample in case of a bacterial infection. When the antibiotic made me really nauseated I stopped taking it for 2 days and Ta-Da, my symptoms disappeared. I TOLD her this and she still told me the above!?

I want to file a complain with my state's board of medicine, but would like advice on whether this is a valid complaint and what I should include in it.

I know because she is a private practice family doctor she can refuse care to whomever she pleases...but still. I think I was treated unfairly in the year and a half I have been seeing her.

Answer
you didn't define what "ethnically" meant.... if it was racially inappropriate.  You have to figure out what you want to get out of the reporting.... if there is a quality of care issue, definitely report it to the state board.  If you guys just never got along... it becomes a little hazier.... there are too many doc's that don't listen to patients... you are absolutely right... with the ab and diarrhea thing, a little listening and good advice (stop the antibiotic and recheck) would have been better than chasing her tail by checking for stool sample superinfections.

The BV issue... I am not sure there is a valid complaint for her not seeing you.... I don't take sides and try to remain impartial, but the worst thing that could have happened is continued irritation from the infection.

You have a lot of info spelling out that you need a more caring and receptive doctor..... also, re: the BV.... it sounds like your sexual partner needs to be treated too..... or else you may get it again.

Good luck with it..... and remember.... her problems with listening are her problems.... they affect you but not all doctors are like that and you will wind up with someone that you can pair with to keep you healthy in the future.....
