Concerned About Post-Vaccination Leg Swelling in Toddler - Is This an Allergic Reaction?

Question
I took my 2 year old son to the hospital yesterday to get his shots. They said he's healthy in everyway. They gave him a shot in his right leg. It was fine yesterday but today in the morning it was swelled up red and itis very hot. It is night and his leg hasn't changed it is still red hot and swelled up. He was scratching it and when i touch his leg he says ow and is in pain. Please Help

Answer
Hi Meche,

It sounds like your son is having an allergic reaction and you need to give him an antihistamine (like Benadryl at the safe recommended dose for his weight) and take him to see a doctor today.  Maybe take a picture of his swollen leg now on your digital phone or camera so you can show it to the doctor in case it settles down with the antihistamines.

You can't mess around with allergic reactions, the next one could be life threatening so you need to know what he reacted to and have it on all his medical records.

All my best,
Margot
