QuestionHello,
I am 6 months pregnant and I have this constant feeling that there is something, like food, stuck in my throat. I first noticed it about a week ago while eating some pecans, it felt like one got stuck in my throat. I tried swallowing bread and everything to push it down, but the feeling is still there. I know that while you're pregnant you can get acid reflux, which can cause food to come back up your throat, (which would cause this feeling) and I do sometimes have acid reflux since becoming pregnant, depending on what I eat, or how much. But, this just feels different. It doesn't hurt, or burn or anything, it is just really annoying to feel like you have something stuck in your throat. Should I go see my family practice doctor, or do you think it will go away on it's own? I feel kind of silly scheduling a doctor's appointment because I think I have food stuck in my throat.
AnswerIt isn't stuck in your throat.... you have reflux that has irritated your lower esophagus and with many hollow organs, the pain is "referred" and not direct, so you feel it vaguely in the lower neck, upper chest. Talk to your doc about reflux meds, at least a lot of maalox mylanta, and see if you can calm down the inflammation in the esophagus..... the preg physically compresses the stomach a little and forces food backwards.... try smaller meals....
