QuestionHi Doctor
My best friend is a big strong guy, former jock, strong as an ox. He doesnt smoke, doent overdo alcohol, and eats healthy.
However, he seems to get anything that is going around. He averages about 15 sick days a year. He is now off work fighting the Norwalk virus. He hasnt been on a cruise-no idea how he got it no outbreaks in my area.
I am the opposite. A 98 pound weakling. But, I am never sick, and have missed one day of work in the past two.
What up with this? Does it mean I am healthier and will live longer? Why is his immune system weak compared to mine? We are both adopted so have no idea about our relatives.
Thanks for your thoughts!
AnswerBud,
It all depends on the inner workings of the host immune system. Some people are genetically gifted so to speak with a very health immune system. Others don't. You can bolster the immunity of a person to some degree with proper diet, supplements (herbals) and proper exercise (if not over done). Rest and sleep is very important as is hydration. Stress also plays a part... both emotional and physical stress can have negative effects on the immune system. Biggest thing I see with "jocks" is that they tend to over train and as a consequence have a load of stress on the body including the immune system (B and T cells mediators) and increase in oxidative load (free-radicals) and thus a weakened immune system. Adaptogen herbs are probably most helpful. Read my book on the subject. R. rosea and Jiaogulan tea (or pills) would be ideal.
