Understanding a Weakened Immune System: Causes & Solutions

Question
Hi there,

I think I must have an extremely bad immune system, but I am unsure why or how! I am 18 years old, nearly 19, I am extremely active - I have just begun training for duathlons, in fact - and eat really well...I am in college studying Nutrition so I have a good background in food knowledge. But I ALWAYS get sick. I don't usually get sick on my own but whenever one of my friends is sick, no matter how many times I wash my hands or stay away from them and things they've touched, etc, I will always get sick. Mainly colds. I don't understand how my immune system can be so bad if I am so healthy, and it's so frustrating as I have now been sick three times in two months and this really takes away from my training! Any suggestions as to how to improve my immune system and any ideas as to why I am so bad like this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Anna.  Are you sure that you are really sick?  As oppose to allergies?
Are your symptoms fever, body aches, coughing, sneezing?  Or are they more itchy watery eyes, sneezing, post nasal drip?
Sometimes how healthy or sick you are has to do with your parents and your genes, not with you yourself.
I suggest taking a multivitamin.  That may help.  Other than that you may want to see a Dr. to see if there is an underlying cause.
Good luck to you.
