Understanding Immune System Issues After Bacterial Meningitis in Infants

Question
hello, i have a 7 month old son called Kian. On boxing day last year he was admitted into hospital, at just 6 weeks old with bacterial meningitis. Ever since then he has had ounless chest infections, eye infections ear infections and adly been off antibiotics. We nagged and nagged for a teston his immune system andfnally they did it, now we have been told he has abnormal blood results, they said his immune system is not what it should be and all the accines he had count for nothing so he must have them again. They started him on Septrin 3 days ago, he has 5ml everyday. I was wondering if the antibiotic he is on now will prevent him getting meningitis again and these chest infections, i am very worried. also, what will they do if the antibiotics dont build him back up? please answer, thanks tracey.

Answer
there are a lot of different possibilities on problems with immune systems.  If the doctors think that he truly has an immune system problem, then I would suggest he be seen by a specialist in infectious disease or hematology for children.  I don't know if you are in the US or if you have access.

However, immune system problems are rare and lots of children have repeated respiratory and ear infections, especially if they are in daycare or exposed to several other children.  The fact that he gets better in between illnesses is good, because antibiotics help get you better, but the immune system finishes the job up.   The prevention antibiotic is a good idea and you have to take one step at a time, but with this history, I don't know what the abnormal blood result was, but I would consider seeing a specialist.
