Understanding the Risk of Repeat Premature Labor: Causes & Prevention

Question
i am 19 and i have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and with both pregnancies i went in to premature labor around 6 months and was given shots and oral medications. Now I'm pregnant again and I'm 17 weeks pregnant but I'm scared I'm going to go through premature labor again . what is the percentage that it would happen again? and could there be a reason my body does this?

Answer
Hi,
Well, there are women who are more likely to have repeat premature labor and it sounds like you are one of those women.  There isn't a true known cause, but some think that women who have preterm labor with all pregnancies are extremely sensitive to pregnancy hormones.

If you had it with both of your others, you sound like you have a good chance to have it again.

Sit down and have a good talk with your doctor about things you can do now to help reduce the risk if you can.  No smoking, healthy diet, possibly decreased activity if you are on your feet all day.

I hope you don't have it again.  I know what it's like I had it with all of mine and it's very scary.  But the more your can do to help lessen the risk the better!

Good luck to you!
