Pelvic Fracture & Pregnancy: Understanding C-Section Risks & Considerations

Question
Hi, I fractured my left pelvis in 2002, had 4 compressed disk in my lower back, I am 38 and now 14 weeks pregnant and I was told that I would need a C-Section as I would not be able to delivery naturally due to the pain as of a result of my injury 4 years ago, this was a friend who told me this but I haven't mentioned it to my Doctor as I never thought it would be a problem. I have already had 3 children naturally so I am not opposed to a C-section I am just curious... Thanks

Deborah

Answer
Hi,
You have what is called a proven pelvis. In other words, you have had three babies pass through your pelvis.

If one of these was after your injury, I would see no clear reason why you would automatically need a c-section.

But if you haven't then you need to consider your current condition, if you have any on going difficulty, how your pregnancy progresses and while it progresses if it begins to create issues with your back and pelvis pain wise.

I lean more toward caution with your back than with your pelvis, but I am not a ortho. physician.

If you are healed and doing well and the pregnancy does not trigger any back or pelvic pain, I can see no reason that labor couldn't continue naturally.

Make an appointment with an ortho doc, preferably one who knows your history for a good "beginning" check of your back and pelvis and follow up with him/her throughout your pregnancy.  Get a great supportive team around you to help you make your final decision.

Also consider chiropractic care if you haven't already.  The normal strain a pregnancy can put on your spin and pelvis deserves some TLC...
