Understanding Newborn Stimulation: What Really Happens at Birth?

Question
My mom told me when I was born that the doctor "hit" me to make me cry and breathe. I do not pay attention to this kind of stuff. Did he hit me on my swaddling blanket or my diaper?

Answer
Most likely the doctor "hit" you on the back (sometimes doctors hit on the buttocks but that wasn't as common) in order to clear your lung passageways. While this was common in the past, caregivers today use nasal aspirators and suctioning devices instead. You were naked, as this was right after your birth, and hence would not be wearing swaddling or a diaper.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
