Understanding Your Pregnancy Report: 39 Weeks & 2-3cm Dilated

Question
My wife is 39.3 weeks pregnant & as in report Cervix is 2-3 cm dilated 70% effaced posterior CX. can u explain
The complete report written by the doctor is like this: AC-39 wks + 3 days, EFW 3.64 kg PV 2-3 cm dilated , 70% effaced, posterior, CX. This is the complete report. Please can any one explain it to me in details and when my wife will proably deliver (Her due date is 26th June) and this is our first baby and we dont know what will happen next and how.

Answer
EFW 3.64 kg = the baby's current estimated weight

2-3 cm dilated = your wife's cervix is open wide enough that 2 or 3 fingers can be inserted in the opening; full dilation is 10 cm (or the width of the baby's head)

70% effaced = the length of your wife's cervix is approximately 1 cm (0% effaced would be 4 cm, 100% effaced would mean the cervix was completely flat against the uterus, which has to happen prior to birth)

posterior CX = the cervix is pointed toward your wife's back, and might be difficult for the doctor to reach on exam

What this means for delivery = Absolutely Nothing.  Since this is your wife's first baby, she is more likely to deliver after her due date, even as much as 2 weeks past.  Even if she were 100% effaced and dilated to 4 cm, she could still remain pregnant for several weeks.  On the other hand, she could go into labor tomorrow.  All of these things that the doctor looks for during an internal examination just cannot be used to predict delivery.  Every woman's body works differently, progresses into labor differently, dilates at different rates.
