Postpartum Period & Cycle Recovery: What to Expect

Question
I had a baby Novemeber 25.  got a period on December 27.  HAven't had a period since.  Took a blood pregnancy test on February 1.  I said negative. Is there something wrong with me?

Answer
Are you breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding can affect your menstrual cycle.  Many women don't get a period at all when they are breastfeeding.  Even if you aren't breastfeeding, it can take several months after the birth for your cycle to get back to normal.

Also, the bleeding you had at 4 weeks may not have been your period; it may have been postpartum bleeding (even if it had stopped several weeks earlier, sometimes an increase in activity can cause it to resume)

If you are not breastfeeding, your cycle should be getting back to normal 2-6 months after birth.  If it is not back to normal by 6 months after your baby was born, give your doctor or midwife a call.

If you are breastfeeding, your cycle may not return until 2-3 months after you stop breastfeeding. (although it is also normal to have your period start even while you are still breastfeeding)

I hope that helps!

Sincerely,
