Post-Mastectomy Axillary Lumps: What to Expect
QuestionI had a mastectomy of my right breast about four weeks ago, along with axillary lymph node dissection of 11 lymph nodes in the right arm. My recovery is progressing as well as can be expected, tightness in chest area, heaviness of right arm. What bothers me is that there seems to be several soft lumps under the arm, which I believe is probably scar tissue. I'd like to know if this is a frequent occurence after lymph node removal. Also if these lumps will dissipate with time and if not if it's possible to have another surgery to remove these lumps. I'm walking around two miles per day and it's most uncomfortable when I swing my arm as it presses against the lumps and causes irritation. Thank you for your concern.
AnswerYou need to address the question to your surgeon. The tightness and irregularity of the incision in the axilla is a common source of complaint for mastectomy patients. Often one or more nerves have also been sacrificed during the procedure, leading to weird sensations or sensory loss in the inner arm. A consult with a physical therapist often helps patients with range of motion and full return to function.
