Lymphedema After Mastectomy & Bone Marrow Transplant: Understanding Potential Risks & Management

Question
My sister had a masectomy 13 yrs ago with chemo and a bone marrow transplant. She said her 3rd level lymph nodes were left intact. Last week her arm was swollen for the first time since surgery but has since returned to normal. Is there a typical pattern that will now ensue? Should there be aggressive therapy or a wait and see attitude toward the lymphedema?

Answer
I have not examined you or the patient in question, reviewed the medical record, associated laboratory studies, or imaging. What follows is offered to you for information purposes, only and does not constitute treatment.  I advise an examination from a qualified healthcare professional before undertaking any course of treatment.
Occasional arm swelling after mastectomy is usually associated with some type of immobility or an infection.  The remaining lymph nodes become overwhelmed.  Once the infection clears, the arm returns to normal size. Check with your sister.  She may have had a small, seemingly trivial skin infection on her hand or forearm.  She is at risk for systemic infections because of this impaired lymph drainage and should see a physician promptly if she sustains and injury that becomes infected on the affected arm. Good luck.
