Birth Control & Mood Changes/Weight Gain: A Personal Experience

Question
I was on the same birth control for a number of years (ortho novum 1/35) until last year at my annual obgyn exam, my doc convinced me to try the Nuvaring.  Needless to say, I did not enjoy it and after 3 months, I returned to ortho novum 1/35.  However, during that time I gained about 10 lbs. and have not changed my diet or exercise habits.  I also suffer from mild depression which has gotten worse recently.  Assuming that the birth control pills are having a profound effect on my weight and depression, which pill(s) would you recommend I talk to my doctor about in order to lose this weight and help my depression and sour mood?

Answer
Hi Nikki,

There are many pill brands, and each work diffrently for diffrent women. What will cause mild symptoms in one, will cause terrible symptoms in another.

You could talk to your Dr. about other options, or find out if you need to just ride it out as your body adjusts back to the pills. There are some low hormone dose pills on the market, and that may also help you find relief.

Your Dr., knowing background, and family history, will know what perscription will work best for you.

Thanks,

Drea Jean
