Birth Control After Light Periods at 51: Should You Still Worry?

Question
Do I still need to worry about birth control if I only get a very light period once every several months?  I'm 51 years old.  I don't see how I can get pregnant with such a light period that never gets past a light pink color.

Answer
Hi Robin,

While fertility decreases with age, it is recommended that women use some form of birth control until they reached menopause (have not had a period for 12 months). With your age and symptoms, the changes of pregnancy are very small, but as long as you have a period, pregnancy is still possible. If you prefer not to wait, I recommend you check in with a doctor who may be able to give you a clearer picture through hormonal tests.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions let me know.
