Birth Control Pills & Periods: What to Do with Inactive Pills

Question
If I started taking birth control for my first time on the Sunday that I got my period, should I start a new pill packet or continue taking the inactive pills even though my period will not be here for another week or so. Will I still be protected if I only take the inactive pills when I'm not on my period

Answer
The best way to take the pill is to just take 1 pill every day until the packet is done, then start the next packet and take 1 pill every day.  Your period usually comes about 2 days after you start the inactive pills.  You are protected every day (including the days on the inactive pills) as long as you don't miss any pills.
