QuestionIn my English class, we are doing debates this semester. I was given the topic of abortion. I am on the side with the following brief:
"Women should not be guaranteed the right to choose to have an abortion."
I am looking for sites that offer pro-life views of abortion. I am the second (last) to speak, so I have more of an arguing position. I need to be able to give reasons against the "Justification" given by those who are pro-choice, and stuff like that. A quick reply is needed, as the debate is only a few days away... Please contact me ASAP.
AnswerJade Davis,
If you can get you hands on "Politically Correct Death" by Frank Beckworth, your opponent won't stand a chance. However, I would suggest going to www.str.org and reviewing some of the presentations under abortion. The site is a Christian apologetics site, but the arguments against abortion are secular.
However, if you're really short on time, just remember to keep the focus on one question "What is the unborn?". When you are told "women should by guaranteed the right to choose to have an abortion" you must clarify what abortion is. If abortion takes the life of a human being, then I would say women should not be guatanteed the right. If it doesn't, then they should. You can then claim there is scientific evidence that the unborn is a human being (there is). But even if the person says "well nobody knows for sure", tell them we wouldn't kill something if we weren't sure it wasn't human right?
Any objection your opponent raises can be answered by sticking to the fundamental question of "what is the unborn?".
For example, "women should be allowed to abort in case of rape, why bring an unwanted child in the world?"
You could say, "One might ask whether an unwanted child already in the world can be taken out of it if someone does not want it? I would say no. Therefore, this statement of wantedness is begging the question of whether the unborn is a human being or not. If it is a human being, then it should be killed merely for not being wanted. As for rape, what does the circumstance have to do with the decision. Either abortion should be allowed or not, rape, incest or health of the mother are completely secondary to the whether the unborn is human. To sum up, what is the unborn? If the unborn is a human being, which there is proof of, or if it's at least a question, we shouldn't allow a women to kill it."
Always remember "What is the unborn."
If you want answers to specific questions, reply to this post and let me know. You can really present a strong case if you feel like it.
Also, the other person is likely to use an emotional argument against you. Stick to that basic question.
Hope that helped!
