Emergency Contraception After Abortion: What to Do?

Question
Dear Danielle,
I had a medical abortion in the UK on the 28/6/10 and had intercourse for the 1st time since my abortion on the 13/07, unfortunately the condom split and I wasn't able to get Levonelle emergency contraception until 22/23 hours after. I had a positive pregnancy test about 15 hours after intercourse but I'm hoping that is because of the abortion. I lost all nausea and breast tenderness the day after my abortion so I thought everything had gone ok.
I'm very anxious to know whether or not the Levonelle (emergency contraception) has worked or not. How long will it be before I can determine whether a positive test is as a result of the abortion or the emergency pill not working? Is there anything else I can do to ensure I am not pregnant?

Answer
Hi Vanessa :)

You've done everything you can. You took the emergency contraception at a great time period. But the hormone from you pregnancy is still in your body, and that's what you saw on the pregnancy test. And a pregnancy test can detect that hormone for up to two months after your termination.

After a condom breaks, a pregnancy won't show up on a test for at least a couple of weeks.

But what you can do to ensure you did not become pregnant, is see a doctor in a week or two and ask about a blood test. They can see if your Hcg levels are going down, which will indicate that you're not pregnant.
