QuestionHello,
For one of my class assignments I am required to conduct an 'interview' of sorts on the following questions:
1. Do you support abortion? Why or Why Not?
2. When do you believe human life begins?
3. Do you believe that abortion is murder?
I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer these questions for me! Thank you!
AnswerI'd be glad to help.
1) I currently do not support abortion. I have studied and found evidence on both sides and listened to all the arguments and philosophies about it. What it comes down to is what is being aborted, or more simply, what is the unborn. If the unborn is a human being worthy of life, I don't support abortion. If it is not, maybe just a blob of cells or a potential, but not actual, human, then I am for abortion because what do I care what women do with their bodies. I should state I could be wrong in what I believe, but I have studied this and I don't think I am.
2. Human life begins at conception. I know this because you can define life as not being dead. Certainly the conceptus isn't dead (you wouldn't need to abort it, right?). Also, it is a human being simply because two humans (or any animals) can only reproduce their own kind. If it's not a human being or not human, then what is it? Even if it's a potential human being, it still must be an actual something else at the time. It's got a blood type, sex, a unique set of chromosomes different then both parents (but combined of them). It also meets all the biological definitions of life. Most medical textbooks also state that life begins at conception.
3) I do not believe abortion is murder unless the woman or doctor believes they are killing a human being (which most do not) and that they do it with malice (evil intent). Most woman who have abortions believe they are not killing a human being and even if they do, they usually feel it's for the best. Do I believe abortion kills a human being? I do, but killing isn't murder so I would think a very tiny fractions of abortions are murder.
Hope that helped and of course I'm always open to hearing other sides!
