Surgical Abortion Pain Management: Numbing Options & What to Expect

Question
I am getting an abortion, and I was wondering, can they give me a local numbing medication if I ask them to? My clinic offers it but I heard for some women it does not help, and for some women it does. I have a very low tolerance for pain, even though I've heard from someone that it didn't even hurt that bad and se even said they numbing agent didn't work much. What else can be done? Do they only offer local numbing meds, and being "asleep" for the whole procedure as your only option? Would I be aloud to take a Valium and ask them for a local numbing agent and sedation? What else can they give me for pain?

Answer
Most clinics usually get you to take a Valium about 15 minutes before the surgery, and then give you a local anasthetic 5 minutes before the procedure. In my experience and reading, I have not come across any cases where a lot of pain was experienced, though of course the degree to which the anasthetic will numb the pain depends upon the individual.

If you are still worried about this, don't hesitate to tell the doctor and the nurse about your concerns. They will definitely make sure that your pelvic area is sufficiently numb before continuing.

A general anasthetic is not recommended for this procedure because of the greater health risks it poses. Don't worry, try to relax and loosen your muscles. The clinic staff will definitely help you feel at ease.
