Understanding Abortion Options & Risks After Previous Procedures

Question
I am 39 & pregnant although my partner had a condom on.

I am VERY dissapointed as Ive done what was necessary to avoid pregnancy (After 4 abortions) that im not proud of.

I am contenplating another ONLY because Im afraid of getting placenta previa. Ive heard that previous abortions puts me at high risk.

My 3rd abortion I was given the RU pill & a few weeks later, hemoraged & nearly died. I am petrified since then of vaginal bleeding/hemoraging, therefore this is my dilema.

Can I hemorage with a surgical abortion? Im afraid that AFTER the procedure is done, I may hemorage. Im assuming this can only happen if all the tissue is not removed?? Is this likely/possible?
Will the Dr know if ALL the tissue is removed?

Im not sure which route is safest. Im just SO AFRAID of hemoraging! If I keep the baby, I can end up with placenta previa & if I have an abortion, I am afraid of hemoraging like I did with the ru pill.

ANY INFO IS appreciated GREATLY!

Answer
Dear Michelle,

According to my own knowledge, having had 4 abortions does not put you at significant risk for placenta previa, but I do not have enough medical information about your history to feel comfortable answering this question.  IF you WANT the pregnancy and are considering continuing the pregnancy, you should set up an appointment with a good OB/Gyn as soon as possible who will look at your history and help you make a decision.

IF you DO NOT want to continue the pregnancy, the safest way for you to end and early pregnancy is with the Aspiration Procedure.  The Aspiration Procedure is a nonsurgical method that does not utilize scraping or electric suction.  It is gentle on your body, and does not interfere with future pregnancies.  It is noninvasive, so you recover immediately and can resume your normal activities.  Unlike the abortion pill there is no lengthy bleeding or additional risk of hemorrhage.  There is more information on the Aspiration Procedure at: http://www.earlyabortionoptions.com and http://www.earlyabortion.com  Unfortunately it can be very difficult to find a doctor who offers these early abortion procedures.  We have many women travel to New York City from around the country or even from other countries in order to get the Aspiration Procedure and the specialized care we offer at our office.  If you want to come to New York, call our offices and talk to the office manager, Dawn.  She will help you make arrangements.

If you are not in a position to travel, the next safest option for you (given your bad experience with the abortion pill) is a surgical abortion - but make sure to find a doctor who will not scrape your uterus.  Scraping is completely unnecessary in early abortion. It is the scraping that causes most of the risk of excessive bleeding.

Personally, I am not judgmental of women who are in situations where they need to end a pregnancy more than once.  I see many many responsible, thoughtful, and caring women who find themselves in these situations, and you sound like one of them.  Don't beat yourself up.  You're not alone.

I hope you are able to find the medical care you need and that this was helpful,
Doctor Joan
