Misoprostol and Abortion: Understanding Timing and Expected Results
QuestionHi,
I went to the Dr. on Tuesday morning. He gave me 200 mg. of Mifprex to take orally while there. He also gave me a bottle containing (2) 200 mg. pills of misoprostol (400 mg. total). I was instructed to take them approx. 24 hours later which I did. That was yesterday at 10 a.m. After reading about this online I don't think this Dr. gave me enough of the medication to induce the abortion. I have had some minor cramping since then but no bleeding. It's now going on 20 hours since I took the pills and I have not lost the baby yet. Is this normal? I read that most women start the abortion within 8 hours but on the fact sheet the Dr. gave me it said bleeding could start up to 48 hours later in some women. I now feel like I am going crazy waiting for this to happen! Should I find another Dr. who is willing go give me extra misoprostol or should I wait and see what happens?
AnswerDear JK,
I would not begin to worry until 48 hours have passed. If you have any questions, the best place to get them answered would be at the doctor's office where you got the medication. Don't go by what you read online, most of the time the people writing those posts have no medical training at all.
It can be nerve wracking, I agree. Just hang in there, I'm sure everything will work out perfectly. You are under a doctor's care, so feel free to call that doctor with any questions you may have. Ask about the dosage if it concerns you. I'm sure you'll feel a lot better once you've cleared up any misunderstandings.
Best wishes,
Deb
