Risks of Failed Medication Abortion: Fetal Impact & Post-Abortion Concerns

Question
I am trying to find out specifically what the risk to fetus is for failed med/abort using mif and miso as prescribed in a single dose.  I can only find vague information...am still pg, and have neg side effects:  pain/vaginal cyst (ruptured)~concerned about p.i.d.  I do not want to repeat the medicine procedure and do not know how I will be able to get a surgical abortion. Your prompt attention would be so appreciated, as I am really bothered by the thought of a later term abortion.  Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi, Lee,

You didn't tell me how far along you were when you had the medical abortion. That could be significant. The medical abortion tends not to work at all after 49 days, and doesn't work well in the last week or so before that, either.

That said, since you are still pregnant, then there is a remedy. A doctor can give progesterone throughout pregnancy, and in some cases, the baby will be born normal. Most likely either this would happen, or you would have a miscarriage later, or in the event that your body didn't act, they'd have to operate.

You can find a doctor willing to work with you both by going here:

http://pregnancycenters.org/

Find your local center and ask for a referral to a doctor who can help with this problem.

If for some reason you are unable to find a center through this web site, look in your yellow pages under "abortion alternatives".

PID is always a concern. Did you take the second course by mouth, or insert it in the vagina? If the latter, there is more danger of infection. Until it has been ascertained that your cervix is closed, in my opinion no internal exam should be done. If you go to a center, they can do an ultrasound and probably tell quite a bit.

You may still have issues that have to do with why you wanted an abortion in the first place. This is another area where a center can be helpful. They provide counseling. They can also help meet your needs, if the reason was financial or because of relationship problems. So many women are being coerced that I always want to know if a woman freely chose abortion, or whether someone either tried to coerce her or lied to her about pregnancy and abortion.

The doctors who work with these centers will provide free or low cost services, and arrangements to help cover the cost of birth are also possible. Each situation is different, and they know where all the helpful programs are.

But please go to a doctor who thinks of you and your baby as two patients. He will be helpful. Please let me know how this turns out.
