QuestionHi,
Thank you for taking the time to read this & reply.
I am desperate for help & do not know where to turn.
I am 39, have a 19 year old & a 5 year old.
When I was 17, I had an abortion. When I was 29, I had another. I had another at 32. Then another (believe it or not) & Im NOT proud at 36.
I just found out that I am pregnant. although my partner had a condom on.
I am contenplating an abortion ONLY because IM petrified of Placenta Previa. Ive read that previous abortions raise the risk as well as being over 35 & having previous children.
I Truly & honestly DO NOT want to have another abortion but The stress of worrying about bleeding to death is too much for me to handle!
Can you tell me if I was to get placenta previa........Would a C-section illiminate the Hemoraging? Would I still have to worry about bleeding to death?
Im just trying to understand.........Is previa still serious if a c-section is perfomed? The reason I ask is that I told my sons pediatrician that I was worried about this & she said, DO NOT worry, If you do get it, they'll do a c-section (as if thats the solution) but after reading, I heard you can still bleed to death.
Also, I am taking Iron pills now 325 mg's of Ferrous sulphate 3x day for a year now to correct Iron Deficiancy anemia. My Ferritin is now at 25 (from a 7)..........Is it safe to be pregnant with such low stores? My hemoglobin is normal.
Coming from a lay person without medical backround, I suppose Im asking from a Dr's point of view is placenta previa controllable nowadays or is it still possible to hemorage to death with c-section?
Is it just safer to go through with another abortion? I live in NY.
Im soo worried!!
TY!
AnswerDear Jenny,
Your question is similar to another question I answered yesterday -I am thinking you asked both questions. Just in case, I have cut and pasted the other answer, in case you did not get it.
According to my own knowledge, having had 3 abortions does not put you at significant risk for placenta previa, but I do not have enough medical information about your history to feel comfortable answering this question. IF you WANT the pregnancy and are considering continuing the pregnancy, you should set up an appointment with a good OB/Gyn as soon as possible who will look at your history and help you make a decision regarding the risks.
IF you DO NOT want to continue the pregnancy, the safest way for you to end and early pregnancy is with the Aspiration Procedure. The Aspiration Procedure is a nonsurgical method that does not utilize scraping or electric suction. It is gentle on your body, and does not interfere with future pregnancies. It is noninvasive, so you recover immediately and can resume your normal activities. Unlike the abortion pill there is no lengthy bleeding or additional risk of hemorrhage. There is more information on the Aspiration Procedure at: http://www.earlyabortionoptions.com and http://www.earlyabortion.com
Unfortunately it can be very difficult to find a doctor who offers these early abortion procedures. We have many women travel to New York City from around the country or even from other countries in order to get the Aspiration Procedure and the specialized care we offer at our office. If you want to come to New York City, call our offices and talk to the office manager, Dawn. She will help you make arrangements.
If you are not in a position to travel, the next safest option for you (given your concern for bleeding which would be likely with the abortion pill) is a surgical abortion - but make sure to find a doctor who will not scrape your uterus. Scraping is completely unnecessary in early abortion. It is the scraping that causes most of the risk of excessive bleeding.
Personally, I am not judgmental of women who are in situations where they need to end a pregnancy more than once. I see many many responsible, thoughtful, and caring women who find themselves in these situations, and you sound like one of them. Don't beat yourself up. You're not alone.
I hope you are able to find the medical care you need and that this was helpful,
Doctor Joan
