Uneven Twin Growth at 6 Weeks: Understanding Potential Concerns

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I am pregnant with twins. i did an ultrasound in my 6 weeks and the size of the 2 embryon are not the same. First embryon size 8mm and the other on 15 mm. Is it normal or do i have problem development with one of them. The dr said i might have mal formation embryon and it may has health problem in the futur so in two weeks if it doesn't grow properly i have to decide if ill keep it or i ll have to stop the life of the small one without affecting the other. Please advice

ANSWER: Hi dear Sabine,

at six weeks it is impossible to tell what will happen.
But with a so great difference in size normally the small one will disappear.
Have another US made at 20 weeks and than the doc can see whats there
and also discuss the chances the situation of the normal fetus.
Than it is still time to decide. No action at this moment is best.
Bye for now and keep me posted .

QUESTION: Thank you for your prompt answer, but i still need to know if the small embryon will disappear is it a chance to have a bad effect on the normal one. Or what will be the risk if after 20 week i must have abortion for the smaller embryon does the normal one will be affected badly?

Answer
Hi dear Sabine again,

The smaller embryon has no chance to survive. This does not influence the development and maturation of the
larger one. Often at childbirth no trace of the smaller ones can be found.
It is  adsorbed. If the larger embryon however is affected or damaged this will be shown at 20 weeks for sure.
An abortion, depending on your wish and the quality of life for the future baby, can be done in a specialized
clinic.
Do not worry too much and have patience. Right ?
Take care !
