Understanding Misoprostol & Possible Abortion Issues: A Medical Q&A

Question
Hello;

I've read a few of the questions you've answered but I guess some of them don't perfectly match my situation. I was given 7 misoprostol pills and 5 smaller yellow pills from a pharamcy. I was instructed to take two vaginally, two orally, and one every hour. On the last misoprostol pill, I was directed to take all of the five yellow pills. I'm only 4 weeks pregnant. I experienced only the abdominal pain, and cramping, as though I'm having a period, but I still haven't shed any blood as yet. I took them on Saturday and it is now Monday. I'm having minor discomfort as though my period is about to start, but that has been going on from before I took the pills. What do you think is going to happen? Has the fetus died or will die due to the pills? If the fetus is fine will he/she be at a high risk of birth defect?

Answer
Hello, Courtney,

You are correct; every woman's situation is a little bit different. It depends on a lot of things, like the date she took pills, what she took, doses, how far along she was, how strong the pregnancy hormones were (there is wide variation), and so forth.

The first problem is that the instructions the pharmacy gave you for how to take the pills was all wrong. You also have no way of knowing if what they gave you was really the drugs they claim. A lot of these people simply want your money. Many of them sell bogus pills. The main thing, however, is that it has only been two days. A lot can happen in the next few days. Also, if you were already having minor cramps, either that was just how you responded to pregnancy, or your pregnancy was going to miscarry anyway. As for the yellow pills, I am guessing they were Mifepristone.

A lot also depends on whether you measured your pregnancy from your last menstrual period, or from the date you think you conceived. If you can tell me that, it will help me be more specific. After a certain point in the pregnancy, the baby will be fine. Before a certain point, the pills will have no real effect.

The fact you took pills vaginally, however, is cause for concern. Misoprostol depresses a woman's immune system, making her vulnerable to deadly infection. A woman can develop Toxic Shock Syndrome. This is when the woman's body doesn't fight back against the massive infection. Once her organs start to fail, it is unlikely anybody will be able to save her life. For this reason, you should go to a doctor immediately and ask him to test you for Clostridium sordellii. If you have it, he MUST start aggressive life-saving measures IMMEDIATELY. Please do this!

It sounds like you don't really want to have an abortion. If that is the case, ask the doctor also to test your hormones, and if necessary, to supplement progesterone until your baby is able to make his or her own. That would be a couple of weeks. The chances will then be good that the baby is fine.

If you start to bleed too heavily, get immediate medical attention. In the meantime, it would be wise to eat foods with red hot peppers in them, on a regular basis.

Please let me know what happens, and please take care of yourself.
