QuestionHi Cheryl,
I took 4 pills of misoprostol which is a dose of 800mg 2 pills orally and 2 vaginally . I felt a cramping and the bleeding was very few . By that time I was at the beginning of the 8th week of my pregnancy and after few days I went to the doctor and the scan showed the baby was normal I even saw the fetus moving and the heart beat, however I didn't tell my doctor I took the pills because abortion is illegal but now I am 9 weeks pregnant and I very afraid that my child will be born with abnormalities as cause of my action. I want to know how much dose misoprostol effect the fetus in the 8 th week and how can be assured that my baby will be born healthy.
AnswerHello, Sara,
I am Pat rather than Cheryl, but I can answer your question.
By 8 weeks, it is rare for the pills to work. By that time, the baby is comletely formed. There is little danger of any serious problems as a result of taking the pills. Some babies have problems for other reasons, but the pills wouldn't be to blame for that.
I worked with a woman who was exactly in your position. She tried the pills, and they didn't work, and she was hoping her baby would be fine. She wrote to me several times. She has had her baby, and her baby is healthy and normal.
Here is why the baby is all right by eight weeks. The pills work by causing a woman to go into labor. If it doesn't work, then there is no threat. The other medication some women take cuts off the supply of progesterone to the baby, but the baby starts making his own progesterone during the seventh week, so then there is enough progesterone and the baby will be fine.
Taking the pills vaginally is dangerous, because it can cause an infection which is life-threatening. If you can find a doctor you can trust, ask him to test you for Clostridium sordellii. Ask him to test your blood to see if your immune system is all right. If you have it, and your immune system is not as it should be, you need immediate life-saving treatment. The chance of having a problem is small, but not zero.
Hang in there. It will probably be difficult, but you both should be fine. Be patient with yourself. I will be here for you whenever you need to talk. Please keep in touch. Take care.
