Spa Impeller Leak: DIY Repair vs. Professional Service
QuestionI have noticed the impeller leaking for the past week or so. Can I change it out myself or must I have the local Spa Store charge me $100.00 for a replacement impeller?
Bill
AnswerHi Bill, The problem is probably not the impeller, but the seal behind the impeller. the problem that usually arises is that while trying to pry loose the impeller to change the seal the impeller often breaks. The seal and impeller usually cost no more than about $30. A phillips screw driver, a pair of channel locks.( To grip the impeller with) A large flat screw driver is all you will need to fix this. If you remove the plastic cover on the rear of the pump you should see a slot to insert that flat screw driver. It will hold the shaft still while you turn the impeller counter clock wise with the channel locks. Once the impeller is removed the seal should pop right out of the impeller housing. It may be a two or three piece seal depending on your pump. I would suggest removing these and taking them to the dealers parts department and letting the service techs match up the parts you need. There are about thirty common seals and hundreds of impellers to choose from. Good luck. If I can help further, you know where to find me.
